In the context of metallurgy and materials science, it describes the workpiece or component that undergoes the nitriding process. Nitriding is a surface hardening heat treatment process that diffuses nitrogen into the surface of a metal, typically steel. This process creates a hard, wear-resistant surface layer while maintaining a softer, tougher core.
