Nierfunctiemonitoring, also known as renal function monitoring, refers to the systematic assessment of how well the kidneys are performing their essential functions. This is crucial for detecting and managing kidney disease, as well as monitoring the effects of certain medications or conditions on kidney health.

The primary functions of the kidneys include filtering waste products from the blood, regulating fluid balance, maintaining electrolyte and acid-base balance, and producing hormones involved in red blood cell production and blood pressure control. Nierfunctiemonitoring aims to evaluate these processes.

Common methods for monitoring kidney function include blood tests and urine tests. Blood tests typically measure creatinine levels and estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR). Creatinine is a waste product produced by muscle metabolism, and its level in the blood is inversely proportional to kidney function; higher creatinine generally indicates poorer kidney function. eGFR provides an estimate of how efficiently the kidneys are filtering waste. Another blood test, blood urea nitrogen (BUN), also provides insights into kidney function and hydration status.

Urine tests can assess for the presence of protein (proteinuria) or blood (hematuria), which are indicators of kidney damage. The albumin-to-creatinine ratio (ACR) in urine is a sensitive marker for early kidney damage, particularly in individuals with diabetes or hypertension. Regular monitoring helps healthcare professionals track changes in kidney function over time, allowing for timely intervention and adjustments to treatment plans to preserve kidney health and prevent complications.
