Nickelcorrinoid

Nickelcorrinoid is a class of organometallic compounds that feature a central nickel atom coordinated within a corrin ring. The corrin ring is a macrocyclic ligand similar to the porphyrin ring found in heme and chlorophyll, but it is characterized by a direct bond between two adjacent beta-carbons, leading to a reduced ring system. Nickelcorrinoids are primarily found in biological systems, where they play crucial roles in various enzymatic reactions.

The most well-known nickelcorrinoid is the active cofactor in the enzyme methyl-coenzyme M reductase (MCR), which is essential for methanogenesis in archaea. This nickel-containing cofactor, often referred to as coenzyme F430, catalyzes the reductive demethylation of methyl-coenzyme M to methane. The nickel atom in coenzyme F430 exists in different redox states, cycling between Ni(I) and Ni(III) during the catalytic process.

Beyond methanogenesis, nickelcorrinoids have been identified in other bacterial and archaeal enzymes. These enzymes are often involved in reductive or oxidative transformations of organic compounds. The unique electronic properties of nickel, combined with the specific coordination environment provided by the corrin ring, enable these enzymes to perform challenging chemical reactions.
