Nickelallergien, also known as nickel allergy, is a common form of contact dermatitis triggered by exposure to nickel. Nickel is a metal frequently found in everyday objects such as jewelry, coins, zippers, buttons, and even certain electronic devices. When a person with a nickel allergy comes into contact with these items, their immune system mistakenly identifies nickel as a harmful substance. This leads to an allergic reaction, typically a localized rash.

The symptoms of nickel allergy usually appear within hours to days after contact with nickel. The affected skin may become red, itchy, and inflamed. Blisters can sometimes form, and the skin might feel warm to the touch. The rash is most often seen on areas that have direct contact with the nickel-containing object, like the earlobes from earrings, the wrist from watches, or the waistline from belt buckles. In more severe cases, the rash can spread.

Diagnosis of nickel allergy is usually made through a patch test, a common dermatological procedure. Small amounts of nickel are applied to the skin under a patch, and the area is observed for a reaction over a few days. The most effective way to manage nickel allergy is to avoid direct contact with nickel-containing products. This can involve choosing nickel-free jewelry, clothing with plastic or coated metal fastenings, and being mindful of potential sources of nickel in the environment. For those with severe reactions, topical corticosteroids may be prescribed to alleviate inflammation and itching.
