Nge4

Nge4 is a chess move notation used to indicate that a knight on the g-file moves to the square e4. The N stands for knight; the g denotes the origin file; e4 is the destination square in standard algebraic notation.

In games with multiple knights that could reach e4, the move is disambiguated by including the origin file or rank. If only the knight on the g-file can reach e4, the move is written Nge4. If another knight on a different file can also reach e4, the moving knight’s file is added, yielding Nge4 or Nce4 accordingly. If two knights lie on the same file and both can reach e4 (for example on g3 and g5), the file alone is not enough and the rank is added instead, yielding N3e4 or N5e4.

Purpose and typical use: Nge4 centralizes a knight, increases control of central squares, and can threaten f2 or d2. It may be part of aggressive setups or tactical sequences, aiming to pressure the e4 square or support f4, d5, or a king attack. The exact consequences depend on the position and other pieces.

Illustrative scenario: In a position where two black knights can reach e4, one on g5 and one on c5, Black might play Nge4 to place the g5-knight on e4, increasing central pressure. If the other knight could also go to e4, the notation would be Nce4, signaling the other knight.
