NewsMLG2

NewsML-G2 is an IPTC-standardized framework for packaging and describing news content for distribution. Also known as NewsMLG2, it represents the second generation of NewsML and is designed to support the exchange of structured, multimedia news items across editorial and distribution workflows.

Developed by the International Press Telecommunications Council (IPTC), NewsML-G2 replaces earlier formats with an extensible data model capable of describing stories, articles, and associated assets such as images, audio, and video, along with metadata about provenance, licensing, and publication status.

Architecturally, NewsML-G2 centers on Items and Containers. A NewsItem can reference ContentItem for the article body, ImageItem for photographs, or other MediaItems for assets. Each item carries metadata fields such as headline, dateline, pubDate, and rights information. The model supports relationships, versioning, and metadata inheritance to support complex editorial and licensing workflows.

NewsML-G2 is predominantly XML-based, with a formal schema and vocabulary defined by IPTC. It also provides taxonomies and codes for subject matter, geography, audience, and rights terms to enable consistent tagging across providers and platforms. The packaging is designed to be interoperable across publishers, distributors, and archives, and can be serialized for transmission or storage depending on system capabilities.

Adoption: It is used by many news organizations, agencies, and vendors seeking interoperable delivery of multi-format content. It interoperates with other IPTC standards such as IPTC Core Metadata (XMP) and is supported by numerous content management systems and search/indexing solutions to improve discovery, rights management, and workflow automation.
