A neuroöphthalmologin is a physician who has completed medical school, followed by residency training in either neurology or ophthalmology, and then specialized fellowship training in neuro-ophthalmology.

This subspecialty deals with conditions affecting the optic nerve, brain pathways responsible for vision, and the muscles that control eye movement. Common conditions treated include optic neuritis, which is inflammation of the optic nerve, often associated with multiple sclerosis. Other areas of expertise include papilledema, a swelling of the optic disc due to increased intracranial pressure, and visual field defects caused by strokes or brain tumors. Neuro-ophthalmologists also diagnose and manage conditions like nystagmus, involuntary eye movements, and cranial nerve palsies that affect eye movement.
