Netværksclusters, often referred to as network clusters, are groupings of interconnected computers or servers that function as a single coherent system. The primary purpose of a network cluster is to improve performance, reliability, and availability of applications and services. By distributing workload across multiple nodes, clusters can handle a larger volume of requests than a single machine and can continue to operate even if one or more nodes fail.

There are several types of network clusters, each designed for specific purposes. High-performance computing (HPC) clusters are used for computationally intensive tasks like scientific simulations and data analysis. High-availability (HA) clusters are designed to minimize downtime, ensuring that services remain accessible even during hardware or software failures. Load-balancing clusters distribute incoming network traffic across multiple servers to prevent any single server from becoming overloaded. Storage clusters consolidate storage resources from multiple devices into a single, unified pool, offering scalability and redundancy.

The implementation of network clusters involves specialized hardware and software. Network interconnects, such as high-speed Ethernet or InfiniBand, are crucial for efficient communication between nodes. Clustering software manages the nodes, handles workload distribution, monitors node health, and orchestrates failover mechanisms. Technologies like shared storage, heartbeat mechanisms, and distributed file systems are commonly employed to ensure data consistency and service continuity. Network clusters are fundamental to modern IT infrastructure, underpinning many of the services we rely on daily, from web hosting to cloud computing.
