Netværksslicing

Netværksslicing, or network slicing, is a core technology concept within 5G mobile networks. It allows a single physical network infrastructure to be divided into multiple virtual, isolated end-to-end networks. Each virtual network slice can be tailored to meet the specific requirements of a particular application, service, or user group. This means that different slices can have distinct characteristics such as guaranteed bandwidth, low latency, high reliability, or enhanced security, all operating over the same physical hardware.

The creation of these slices is achieved through virtualization and software-defined networking (SDN) principles. Network functions that were traditionally performed by dedicated hardware are now implemented as software, allowing for flexible deployment and management. This virtualization enables the dynamic allocation and configuration of network resources. For example, a slice designed for autonomous vehicles might prioritize ultra-low latency and high reliability, while another slice for video streaming could focus on maximizing bandwidth.
