Netscapelaajennus, often referred to as a Netscape plugin, was a software component that extended the functionality of the Netscape Navigator web browser. These plugins allowed the browser to display content that it could not natively render, such as multimedia files like Flash animations, Java applets, or PDF documents. When a user encountered a file requiring a plugin, Netscape Navigator would typically detect the presence of the necessary plugin and, if installed, launch it to process and display the content within the browser window.

The development of plugins was a crucial step in the evolution of the World Wide Web, enabling richer and more interactive online experiences. Popular examples included Adobe Acrobat Reader for PDFs, Macromedia Flash Player for animations and interactive content, and various media players for audio and video. However, plugins also presented security and stability challenges. A poorly written or malicious plugin could compromise a user's system or cause the browser to crash. Furthermore, maintaining and updating multiple plugins could be cumbersome for users.

As web standards evolved and browsers gained more built-in capabilities, the reliance on plugins gradually diminished. Technologies like HTML5, CSS3, and JavaScript allowed for more sophisticated multimedia and interactive content to be displayed directly by the browser without the need for external software. Consequently, the use of Netscape-style plugins has largely become obsolete, replaced by more integrated and secure web technologies.
