Nestoridae

Nestoridae is a family of birds endemic to New Zealand. It currently contains only one living genus, Nestor, which includes two extant species: the kaka (Nestor meridionalis) and the kea (Nestor notabilis). The family also includes extinct species, such as the Norfolk kaka (Nestor productus) and the Chatham kaka (Nestor chirindicus).

Kiwis, which were once classified within Nestoridae, are now placed in their own family, Apterygidae. Nestorids are characterized by their strong, curved beaks, which they use for a variety of purposes including probing for food, climbing, and defense. They are generally large, omnivorous birds, with diets consisting of nectar, seeds, fruits, insects, and carrion.

The kaka is found in the forests of New Zealand, inhabiting both the North and South Islands, as well as Stewart Island. It is a highly arboreal species, spending most of its time in trees. The kea, on the other hand, is found in the alpine regions of the South Island, known for its intelligence and curiosity. Both species are considered endangered, facing threats from habitat loss, introduced predators, and disease. Conservation efforts are underway to protect these unique birds and their populations.
