Nestgedrag, also known as nest behavior, refers to the activities and structures that animals create and maintain to house their young or themselves. This behavior is widespread across various species and serves multiple purposes, including protection from predators, regulation of temperature, and provision of a safe environment for offspring. The complexity and design of nests can vary greatly depending on the species and their ecological niche.

In birds, for example, nest building is a critical aspect of reproduction. Many bird species construct nests using materials such as twigs, leaves, grass, and mud. The materials chosen often depend on the species' habitat and the availability of resources. The nest is typically built by both parents, with the female often laying the eggs and the male providing food and protection. The nest serves as a secure place for the eggs to incubate and for the chicks to grow and develop.

In mammals, nest building is less common, but some species do create nests. For instance, beavers build dams and lodges using branches, mud, and other materials to create a safe and dry environment for their families. In contrast, many mammals give birth to live young and do not build nests, relying instead on their fur and other adaptations for protection.

Insects also exhibit nest behavior, although their nests are often microscopic and constructed from silk or other organic materials. For example, spiders spin webs to catch prey and protect their eggs, while bees build hives to house their colonies.
