Nesslerization
Nesslerization is a chemical analytical method used to determine the concentration of ammonia or ammonium ions in a sample. The technique relies on the Nessler reagent, which is an alkaline solution of potassium mercuric iodide. When Nessler reagent is added to a solution containing ammonia, a characteristic yellow to brown color develops due to the formation of an amino-mercury complex, often referred to as iodomercuramide.
The intensity of this color is directly proportional to the concentration of ammonia present, allowing for
Historically, Nesslerization has been applied in water quality testing to assess the presence of ammonia, which
