Nepomuk

Nepomuk is a name that can refer to several distinct subjects. In the Czech Republic, Nepomuk is a town and municipality in the Plzeň-South District of the Plzeň Region, located in western Bohemia. The town has a historic center and cultural monuments, and its population is in the low thousands. The toponym is connected in Czech tradition with Saint John of Nepomuk, a 14th-century martyr venerated as a saint in the Catholic Church; his cult spread across Bohemia, and many churches and statues bear his name, contributing to the popularization of the form Nepomuk in the region.

In the field of computing, Nepomuk was the name of a KDE project dedicated to a semantic

desktop
framework.
It
aimed
to
provide
a
platform
for
metadata
management,
tagging,
and
interlinked
data
through
ontologies,
enabling
more
advanced
search
and
knowledge
organization
within
the
KDE
ecosystem.
The
project
was
part
of
KDE's
effort
in
the
KDE
4
era
and
drew
on
RDF-based
storage
and
related
technologies.
In
later
years,
Nepomuk
was
largely
superseded
by
other
technologies
and
is
no
longer
the
central
semantic
desktop
component
in
modern
KDE
releases.
