Nepitná

"Nepitná" is a Czech adjective meaning "not potable" or "unsuitable for drinking." It is commonly applied to water, beverages, or any liquid that should not be consumed because of contamination, chemical composition, or insufficient treatment. Grammatically, the word appears in gendered forms (nepitný, nepitná, nepitné) and is frequently seen on signs and labels such as "NEPITNÁ VODA" to warn the public.

The designation covers a range of hazards: microbial contamination (bacteria, viruses, parasites), chemical pollutants (heavy metals, industrial solvents, excess nitrates), salinity, and physical spoilage. The severity of risk varies with the contaminant; some hazards can be reduced by boiling or filtration, while others (e.g., heavy metals, many chemicals) require specialized treatment or source remediation and are not remedied by simple measures.

Authorities and property managers use the label to prevent ingestion from private wells, temporary supplies, decorative fountains, and industrial or construction-site sources. In many countries, including EU member states, national regulations and standards distinguish potable water from non-potable supplies and mandate testing, notification, and corrective action when water fails to meet safety criteria.

For consumers, a "nepitná" warning means avoid drinking, cooking, or preparing food with the water unless it has been independently tested and treated to meet potable standards. Alternative sources such as bottled water or certified treatment systems should be used until the supply is confirmed safe.
