Nepete

Nevete is a small municipality located in the province of Terni within the region of Umbria, Italy. Covering an area of approximately 25 square kilometres, it lies beside a gently sloping valley that is predominantly agricultural, with vineyards and olive groves covering much of its terrain. The town sits at an elevation of around 320 metres above sea level and is accessible via regional roads that connect it to the provincial capital of Terni and the city of Perugia.

First recorded in the 12th century, Nevete developed during the Middle Ages as a fortified settlement amid a network of feudal estates. Its castle, built in the 14th century, was later converted into a defensive keep and remains a prominent landmark. Throughout the centuries, the local economy has been based on agriculture, supplemented by small-scale artisanal production and, more recently, rural tourism. The annual "Festa dell’Olivo" celebrates the olive harvest and showcases regional culinary traditions.

Today, Nevete’s population is roughly 1,200 inhabitants, most of whom reside in the historic village centre surrounded by a forest of oak and chestnut trees. Public services include a primary school, a community health clinic, and a municipal library that houses a small archive of local historical records. Cultural life is enriched by a weekly market, several folk concerts, and exhibitions of local artisans’ work. Nevete is part of the natural park “Monti Sibillini”, a designation that helps protect its ecological diversity and promotes sustainable development. The municipality maintains twin‑town relationships with small communities in France and Spain, fostering cultural exchange and mutual tourism promotion.
