Neotenes

Neoteny is a biological phenomenon where an adult organism retains juvenile characteristics. This can manifest in physical traits, such as a rounder face, larger eyes, and a smaller nose, or in behavioral traits, like playfulness and curiosity. The term originates from the Greek words "neos" meaning new and "telos" meaning adult.

In evolutionary biology, neoteny is often linked to paedomorphosis, a broader concept encompassing the retention of ancestral juvenile traits by descendants. It is thought that neoteny can be advantageous by allowing for a longer period of learning and development, potentially leading to greater adaptability and behavioral flexibility in adult individuals.

Examples of neoteny can be observed across the animal kingdom. The axolotl, a type of salamander, is a well-known example, retaining its larval gills and aquatic lifestyle even when mature. Certain species of fish and insects also exhibit neotenous traits. In humans, neoteny is often discussed in relation to our relatively large heads, flat faces, and extended periods of dependency, which are all characteristics shared with juvenile primates. The extent to which humans are neotenous is a subject of ongoing scientific discussion.
