Neopatriarchy

Neopatriarchy is a term used to describe a contemporary form of patriarchal social structures that may appear superficially democratic or egalitarian but maintain underlying power imbalances rooted in traditional gender roles. It suggests that while overt discrimination might be reduced, subtle mechanisms and cultural norms continue to privilege men and subordinate women.

This concept often arises in discussions of modern societies where legal equality exists but women continue to face challenges in areas such as political representation, economic advancement, and the division of domestic labor. Neopatriarchal systems are characterized by a seemingly consensual acceptance of traditional gendered expectations, where women may voluntarily or involuntarily adopt roles that reinforce male authority or dominance, even within seemingly modern frameworks.
