Neonkalat

Neonkalat is a Finnish term that translates to "neon fish" and is commonly used to refer to several species of small, brightly colored freshwater fish, particularly those popular in the aquarium hobby. The most well-known examples include the neon tetra (Paracheirodon innesi) and the cardinal tetra (Paracheirodon axelrodi). These fish are native to South America, typically found in slow-moving, shaded streams and tributaries of the Amazon Basin.

The defining characteristic of these fish is their vibrant coloration, often featuring a shimmering blue or green horizontal stripe that contrasts with a bright red or pink stripe below. This bioluminescent appearance gives them their "neon" moniker. They are small, schooling fish, meaning they thrive in groups and are often kept in aquariums with other peaceful species.

Neonkalat are omnivores and their diet in captivity usually consists of small commercial fish foods, brine shrimp, and daphnia. They are popular among aquarists due to their attractive appearance and relatively easy care requirements, provided their specific water parameter needs, such as soft, acidic water, are met. Their schooling behavior also adds an dynamic visual element to a well-maintained aquarium.
