Neigbare

Neigbare is a historical and dialectal Dutch adjective meaning “neighboring” or “proximate.” In standard contemporary Dutch the form is rarely used; speakers typically say naburig or aangrenzend. The term is chiefly attested in older texts and in some regional dialects, where it described locations, entities, or features that lie in close proximity to another reference point.

The precise origin of the form neigbare is unclear; some scholars treat it as obsolete, while others note occasional regional survivals. Because of its rarity, neigbare is generally considered archaic or literary, and it appears mainly in historical geography, archival documents, or classical literature rather than in everyday speech.

In modern usage, when a writer intends to convey proximity, they would usually choose naburig (nearby) or aangrenzend (adjacent). The word has limited or no productive use in contemporary Dutch morphology, and few dictionaries include it as a standard entry. In linguistic discussions, neigbare may be cited as an example of an archaic or regional adjective formation that has largely fallen out of use.
