Negativeforming

Negativeforming, in linguistics, refers to the set of processes by which negation is formed and expressed in a language’s grammar. It encompasses the range of strategies used to deny or negate a proposition in an utterance, including periphrastic negation with a separate negation particle, clitic or auxiliary elements, and morphological or affixal negation that marks the verb or predicate.

Negation can be realized in different positions relative to the verb. In many languages, a dedicated negation word or particle appears before the verb or before the main clause, often accompanied by a helping verb or tense marking (as in English: I do not go; she is not coming). Other languages place negation as a suffix, prefix, or internal change on the verb, adjective, or noun phrase.
