Needrequirement

Needrequirement is a term used in requirements engineering to describe the relationship between a stakeholder need and a corresponding system requirement. It is not a formal standard, but a descriptive label for the practice of translating needs into testable requirements. In this sense, needrequirement emphasizes that requirements should be traceable back to underlying needs and justified by stakeholder value.

In practice, the concept covers elicitation, interpretation, refinement, and verification. Elicitation gathers the authentic needs of users, customers, and other stakeholders. Refinement expresses these needs as precise, implementable statements. Verification ensures that each requirement can be traced to a need and that the final product demonstrates the intended value.

An example: a need is "Users require secure access." A corresponding needrequirement would include a requirement such as "The system shall implement multi-factor authentication for all administrative accounts," with traceability maintained in a requirements matrix.

Benefits include improved clarity, justified scope, and easier change management, while challenges include ambiguity in needs, excessive reliance on early assumptions, and maintenance of traceability as the project evolves. Organizations often use traceability matrices and iterative refinement to implement needrequirement effectively.
