N-bromosuccinimide, often abbreviated as NBS, is a chemical reagent used in organic chemistry. Its molecular formula is C4H4BrNO2. NBS is a white crystalline solid that is soluble in a variety of organic solvents. It is commonly employed as a source of electrophilic bromine, making it useful for bromination reactions.

One of the primary applications of NBS is in the allylic and benzylic bromination of alkenes and alkylbenzenes. This reaction, known as the Wohl-Ziegler reaction, typically proceeds via a free-radical mechanism. NBS selectively brominates at the allylic or benzylic position, often in the presence of radical initiators like light or peroxides. This selectivity is attributed to the stability of the allylic or benzylic radical intermediate.

Beyond radical bromination, NBS can also be used for other types of bromination, including the bromination of activated aromatic rings and the addition of bromine across carbon-carbon double bonds under polar conditions.
