Nationalmuseum

Nationalmuseum, or the National Museum, is Sweden's national art and design museum, located in Stockholm. It houses the national collections of paintings, sculpture, drawings, prints, and applied arts and design, with works spanning from the late Middle Ages to the modern era. The museum aims to present Swedish cultural heritage in a European context and to support research and public education.

Its building on Blasieholmen was constructed in the 1860s to house the institution and is widely recognized as a landmark of 19th-century Swedish architecture. The museum closed for a major renovation in 2013 and reopened in 2018 with updated galleries, better accessibility, and expanded space for exhibitions and study facilities.

Nationalmuseum's collections emphasize Swedish art, including paintings, sculpture, drawings, and other works, as well as decorative arts such as furniture, textiles, glass, and ceramics. While Swedish artists are central, the holdings also include European masters and works that illuminate exchanges within the broader history of art and design.

Along with its permanent holdings, Nationalmuseum hosts temporary exhibitions, educational programs, lectures, and family activities. It serves as a research resource for scholars and is part of Sweden's network of state-owned national museums, receiving public support to preserve, present, and interpret the nation's cultural patrimony.
