Nathon

Nathon is the administrative capital and main port of Koh Samui, a tropical island in Surat Thani Province, southern Thailand. Located on the western coast along Nathon Bay, the town serves as the island’s primary commercial center and the seat of Koh Samui District government. It is a hub for local services, markets, and transportation.

Historically a fishing village, Nathon grew into Koh Samui’s principal port and gateway to the mainland. The harbor handles ferries and cargo ships linking the island with the mainland port of Donsak in Surat Thani Province, and it also supports regional boat services to nearby islands. The town’s streets are organized around the waterfront, a market district, and government offices, with a concentration of shops, restaurants, and guesthouses.

Economy and daily life in Nathon are centered on the port and local commerce. While tourism has expanded across Koh Samui, Nathon retains a more local character than many resort areas. Markets sell seafood, produce, and imported goods, and the area provides services for residents, ferry passengers, and workers. Cultural life includes Buddhist temples and community events that reflect southern Thai traditions.

Geographically, Nathon is connected to the rest of Koh Samui by road, with local buses and songthaws facilitating travel to beaches and villages around the island. The town serves as a practical logistics and administration base for visitors and residents alike.

Climate on Koh Samui is tropical monsoon, with warm, humid conditions year-round. The wet season typically runs May through October, while the dry season is roughly November to April.
