Nasslaufzylinder

A Nasslaufzylinder, or wet cylinder, is a type of cylinder used in various mechanical applications, most notably in internal combustion engines. In a Nasslaufzylinder design, the cylinder liner is in direct contact with the engine coolant, which circulates around it. This contrasts with a Trockenlaufzylinder (dry cylinder), where the cylinder liner is surrounded by a water jacket but not in direct contact with the coolant.

The primary advantage of the Nasslaufzylinder design is its superior heat transfer capability. The direct contact with the coolant allows for more efficient dissipation of the heat generated during combustion. This can lead to lower operating temperatures, reduced thermal stress on engine components, and potentially improved engine performance and longevity. The coolant flows through channels cast into the engine block, surrounding the cylinder liner.

This design is common in many modern automotive engines due to its effectiveness in managing heat. However, it also presents some challenges. The cylinder liner must be robust enough to withstand the pressure and temperature fluctuations, and sealing between the liner and the engine block is critical to prevent coolant leaks into the combustion chamber or oil passages. Wear and corrosion of the liner are also considerations that require appropriate material selection and maintenance.
