Nasiana

Nasiana is a term used to describe a type of nasopharyngeal airway device, commonly used in medical settings to maintain a patient's airway during procedures. It is essentially a plastic tube inserted through the nose, which allows for the passage of air to the lungs, bypassing the upper airway.

Nasiana devices come in various shapes and sizes, designed for use in specific populations, such as adults, children, and infants. They differ from other types of airways, like oropharyngeal airways, in that they are inserted through the nose, rather than mouth. Nasianas are typically made of a rigid plastic material, curved to fit comfortably inside the nasal passage, and are often accompanied by a tube for hand ventilation.

Proper insertion of a Nasiana device requires the patient to be seated upright, or in a position that allows the device to slide in smoothly. The medical team must then ensure the device is in the correct position to maintain the patient's airway. This typically involves checking the proper placement of the device's tip, usually against the nasal septum, before securing the device in place.

Advantages of using Nasiana devices include the possible reduction of trauma to the upper airway, as they require less force to insert, compared to oral airway devices. However, improper insertion can lead to nasal trauma or periorbital emphysema, a risk that necessitates proper instruction and technique in medical settings. As with all medical devices, there are various precautions and contraindications for the use of Nasiana devices that should be carefully considered by medical professionals.
