Nasennebenhöhlenoperation, also known as sinus surgery, is a surgical procedure to treat chronic sinusitis and other conditions affecting the nasal sinuses. These air-filled cavities located within the bones of the face and skull can become inflamed and blocked, leading to symptoms such as facial pain, pressure, nasal congestion, and reduced sense of smell. The primary goal of sinus surgery is to open the sinus passages, improve drainage, and restore normal sinus function.

There are several types of sinus surgery. Functional Endoscopic Sinus Surgery (FESS) is the most common technique. It involves using an endoscope, a thin, rigid tube with a camera and light, to visualize the nasal passages and sinuses. Small surgical instruments are then used through the endoscope to remove blockages, such as polyps or thickened tissue, and enlarge the natural openings of the sinuses. Balloon sinuplasty is another less invasive option where a small balloon catheter is inserted into the blocked sinus opening and inflated to widen it. In some cases, particularly when there are significant structural issues or other complications, traditional open surgery may be necessary, though this is less common.

The decision for surgery is typically made after conservative treatments, such as nasal sprays, antibiotics, and allergy medications, have failed to provide relief. Patients undergoing sinus surgery are usually under general anesthesia. Recovery time varies depending on the extent of the surgery, but most patients can return to normal activities within one to two weeks. Potential risks include bleeding, infection, damage to surrounding structures, and recurrence of symptoms. Long-term success rates for sinus surgery are generally good, with many patients experiencing significant improvement in their symptoms.
