Narrowlooms

Narrowlooms refers to a family of textile weaving machines designed for narrow-width fabrics such as curtains, tapes, belts, and interior wall coverings. These looms are distinguished by their compact weaving beds, typically ranging from five to fifteen inches in width, and by specialized warp guides that maintain consistent tension across the limited weave area. Their invention dates to the late nineteenth century, when the rise of the ready-made curtain industry required efficient production of long, narrow panels without the waste inherent in wider looms.

Early narrowloom designs were hand-operated and featured a wooden frame with a punched card system to control pattern sequencing. The late twentieth century saw the introduction of electric motors and computer-aided patterning, expanding the functional repertoire of narrowlooms to include programmable weavings such as jacquard-contrasts and multi-color stripes. Because the working width is small, these looms can be placed directly onto cutting tables, reducing material handling and cutting the cost of production.

In addition to domestic use, narrowlooms are employed by craft studios and museum conservationists for the repair and replication of historical textiles.
