Nanocrystallinity

Nanocrystallinity refers to a material state in which crystalline regions, or crystallites, have dimensions on the nanometer scale. In nanocrystalline materials these crystallites form a polycrystalline network with typical grain sizes from about 1 to 100 nanometers. The small crystallite size leads to a high density of grain boundaries, which strongly influences mechanical, thermal, optical, and transport properties. Nanocrystallinity can occur in metals, ceramics, semiconductors, and polymers, and may be present in systems where crystalline phases are embedded in an amorphous matrix or where grains are differently oriented.

Formation methods include rapid solidification, severe plastic deformation (such as ECAP or HPT), vapor- and solution-phase synthesis, chemical or electrochemical deposition, and templated growth. Characterization relies on techniques such as X-ray diffraction to estimate crystallite size via the Scherrer equation, transmission electron microscopy for direct imaging, electron diffraction, and small-angle scattering.

Properties of nanocrystalline materials often show high strength and hardness due to grain-boundary strengthening, though very small grains can lead to altered deformation mechanisms and reduced ductility. Grain boundaries can also enhance diffusion, catalytic activity, and surface-related phenomena. Thermal stability is a concern, since grain growth can erase nanocrystalline structure at moderate temperatures.

Applications are found in cutting-edge coatings, structural components, catalysis, energy storage and conversion, sensors, and optoelectronic devices. Ongoing research seeks to better control grain size distributions, stabilize nanocrystalline structures against growth, and integrate nanocrystallinity into practical technologies.
