Nacetylglucosamine
N-acetylglucosamine, commonly abbreviated GlcNAc, is an amino sugar derivative of glucose formed when the amine group on glucosamine is acetylated to form an N-acetyl group. GlcNAc occurs widely in nature as a component of structural polymers such as chitin and the polysaccharide components of glycosaminoglycans including hyaluronic acid, chondroitin sulfate, and keratan sulfate. It is also a building block of bacterial peptidoglycan.
In humans and other animals, GlcNAc is produced in the hexosamine biosynthetic pathway, generating the activated
Industrial and dietary use: GlcNAc is sold as a dietary supplement sometimes claimed to support joint and
Safety and availability: GlcNAc is generally well tolerated but can cause gastrointestinal symptoms in some individuals.
