Naatriumkarbonaadi, also known as sodium carbonate or washing soda, is a chemical compound with the formula Na2CO3. It is the sodium salt of carbonic acid. It typically appears as a white, crystalline solid.

Naatriumkarbonaadi is a common ingredient in many household cleaning products, such as laundry detergents and dishwashing liquids. Its alkaline nature helps to soften water, lift grease and stains, and boost the effectiveness of surfactants. In industrial applications, it is a crucial raw material for the production of glass, where it acts as a fluxing agent to lower the melting point of silica. It is also used in the manufacturing of chemicals, paper, and textiles.

Historically, naatriumkarbonaadi was obtained from the ashes of plants, particularly those growing in salt-rich areas, hence the name "soda ash." The Solvay process, developed in the 1860s, revolutionized its production by synthesizing it from common salt (sodium chloride) and limestone (calcium carbonate). Today, it is primarily produced through this industrial process or mined from natural deposits of trona, a mineral containing sodium carbonate and sodium bicarbonate.
