NZD

NZD, or the New Zealand dollar, is the official currency of New Zealand. Its ISO 4217 code is NZD and its symbol is commonly NZ$ to distinguish it from other dollar-denominated currencies. The currency is divided into 100 cents; circulating coins include 10, 20 and 50 cent coins and the $1 and $2 coins; banknotes are $5, $10, $20, $50 and $100. Decimalization was introduced in 1967, replacing the New Zealand pound.

The Reserve Bank of New Zealand (RBNZ) is the issuing authority and central bank. It manages monetary policy and currency issuance. In recent years New Zealand banknotes have been issued in polymer form for durability; the current series features redesigned security features and portray New Zealand imagery.

NZD is a freely floating currency on international FX markets. The RBNZ uses an inflation-targeting framework with an official cash rate. The NZD is often classified as a commodity or risk-sensitive currency, with its value linked to dairy and other primary exports and to global risk sentiment.

Commonly referred to as the Kiwi, the NZD is among the more actively traded currencies in the Asia-Pacific region. It is also used in several Pacific Island economies, including the Cook Islands and Niue, where the NZD circulates alongside local currencies.
