NEUROD4

NeuroD4, also known as neuronal differentiation factor 4, is a member of the NeuroD family of basic helix-loop-helix (bHLH) transcription factors. The NEUROD4 gene encodes a nuclear protein that regulates transcription of genes involved in neuronal differentiation. As with other NeuroD proteins, NeuroD4 commonly forms dimers with E-proteins and binds E-box sequences in target gene promoters to activate or repress transcription, thereby promoting neuronal lineage commitment in neural progenitor cells.

Expression and role: In vertebrate development, NeuroD4 is expressed during neurogenesis in the developing brain and retina. Its activity has been associated with promotion of neuronal differentiation and, in some contexts, with the suppression of gliogenesis. The precise pattern of expression and the resulting cellular outcomes can vary between species and tissue types, and NeuroD4 typically acts in concert with other proneural factors.

Regulation: NEUROD4 is part of a broader regulatory network that includes other proneural bHLH factors and Notch signaling, which together influence the balance between neuronal and glial fates.
