NEMOIKK

NEMOIKK, short for Networked European Multidisciplinary Open Information and Knowledge Kernel, is an international collaboration that develops open standards and software to enable interoperable knowledge graphs and data sharing across science domains. It aims to lower barriers to data integration, support reproducible research, and foster cross-disciplinary collaboration.

Founded in 2015 by a consortium of European universities, research institutes, and industry partners, NEMOIKK began with a focus on semantic interoperability and open data. It received early support from the European Commission and national science agencies, and broadened its partnership network to include institutions in other regions by the late 2010s. As of the mid-2020s, it includes dozens of member organizations and a rotating governance model.

The organization operates through a Steering Council, a Technical Board, and a Secretariat. Working groups develop open standards for metadata, ontologies, APIs, and data licensing, and oversee software projects such as the NEMOIKK Core Platform and the NEMOIKK Ontology Library. These resources are released under permissive licenses and are designed to interoperate with existing semantic web and data science ecosystems.

NEMOIKK activities include software development, methodologically oriented research, capacity-building workshops, and annual conferences. Its impact is most evident in multidisciplinary data integration efforts, knowledge graph projects, and open science initiatives, though it faces challenges related to long-term sustainability, governance transparency, and the complexity of its tools.
