Näkymänäkökenttäanalyysi, often translated as Field of View Analysis or simply FOV Analysis, is a technique used in computer vision and related fields to understand and quantify the spatial extent of what a camera or sensor can observe. It is crucial for tasks such as robotic navigation, augmented reality, surveillance, and in-game camera design. The analysis typically involves determining the angular and linear dimensions of the visible scene from a specific viewpoint.

The fundamental parameters influencing the field of view include the camera's focal length, sensor size (or film gate size), and lens distortion. A wider focal length generally results in a narrower field of view, while a shorter focal length produces a wider field of view. The sensor size also plays a role; a larger sensor with the same focal length will capture a wider scene. Lens distortion, such as barrel or pincushion distortion, can alter the perceived field of view, especially at the edges of the image, and specialized algorithms are often used to correct for these effects during analysis.

FOV analysis can be performed in both horizontal and vertical dimensions, as well as diagonally. It can also be extended to three-dimensional space, defining a frustum or pyramid shape that represents the volume visible to the camera. This 3D FOV is essential for depth perception and object detection algorithms. The output of an FOV analysis can be used to calibrate cameras, predict occlusions, optimize camera placement, or ensure that important elements are within the view of a recording device or interactive system.
