Näköhermovaurio, also known as optic nerve damage, refers to any injury to the optic nerve, a crucial component of the visual system. The optic nerve transmits visual information from the retina to the brain, allowing us to see. Damage to this nerve can lead to a variety of visual impairments, ranging from blurred vision to complete blindness.

There are numerous causes of optic nerve damage. These include glaucoma, a condition characterized by increased intraocular pressure that can compress and damage the optic nerve. Other causes include optic neuritis, which is inflammation of the optic nerve often associated with multiple sclerosis. Traumatic injuries to the head or eye can also directly damage the optic nerve. Furthermore, certain medical conditions such as diabetes, tumors pressing on the optic nerve, and strokes can also result in optic nerve damage.

Symptoms of optic nerve damage can vary depending on the severity and location of the injury. Common symptoms include a decrease in visual acuity, loss of peripheral vision, changes in color perception, and pain with eye movement, especially in cases of optic neuritis. In some instances, individuals may experience a sudden or gradual loss of vision.

Diagnosis of optic nerve damage typically involves a comprehensive eye examination, including visual acuity testing, visual field assessment, and optic nerve imaging such as optical coherence tomography (OCT). Treatment strategies depend on the underlying cause of the damage. For example, glaucoma is managed with medications or surgery to lower eye pressure. Inflammation in optic neuritis may be treated with corticosteroids. In many cases, optic nerve damage is irreversible, making early detection and management critical to preserve remaining vision.
