Nátriumvisszatartásnak refers to the condition where the kidneys retain excessive amounts of sodium in the body. This can lead to an increase in overall body fluid volume, as sodium attracts water. The body tightly regulates sodium levels, and imbalances can have significant health implications.

Several factors can contribute to nátriumvisszatartásnak. These include certain medical conditions such as heart failure, kidney disease, and liver cirrhosis. Hormonal imbalances, particularly those involving aldosterone, a hormone that regulates sodium and potassium levels, can also play a role. Additionally, some medications, like nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) and certain blood pressure medications, can impair the kidneys' ability to excrete sodium. A diet high in sodium can also overwhelm the body's regulatory mechanisms.

This fluid accumulation can increase blood volume, leading to elevated blood pressure (hypertension). In more serious cases, prolonged sodium retention can strain the heart, worsen heart failure symptoms, and contribute to other cardiovascular problems.

Diagnosis typically involves assessing a patient's medical history, physical examination, and blood and urine tests to measure sodium and other electrolyte levels. Imaging studies may also be used to evaluate kidney or heart function. Treatment strategies focus on addressing the underlying cause and managing fluid balance. This often includes dietary modifications to reduce sodium intake, adjusting medications, and prescribing diuretics to help the kidneys excrete excess sodium and water.
