Mõõtmetegevuse

Mõõtmetegevuse, often translated as metrology or measurement science, is the scientific study of measurement. It encompasses the theoretical and practical aspects of measurement, including the definition of units, the development of measurement standards, and the methods and instruments used to perform measurements. Metrology is crucial for ensuring accuracy, consistency, and reliability in all fields where precise measurements are required.

There are three main branches of metrology. Legal metrology focuses on measurements related to trade, public health, safety, and environmental protection. It involves the establishment of legal requirements for measurement instruments and their use to ensure fair trade and consumer protection. Industrial metrology deals with the application of measurement science in manufacturing and industry. This includes calibrating instruments, ensuring the quality of manufactured goods, and optimizing production processes through precise measurements. Scientific metrology is concerned with the establishment of measurement units, the development of new measurement methods and instruments, and the advancement of measurement science itself, often involving fundamental research and the dissemination of knowledge.

The international body responsible for coordinating metrological activities is the International Bureau of Weights and Measures (BIPM). National metrology institutes, such as the Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt (PTB) in Germany or the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) in the United States, are responsible for maintaining national measurement standards and conducting research in metrology. The principles of metrology are applied across a vast range of disciplines, from fundamental physics and chemistry to engineering, medicine, and environmental science, underpinning technological advancement and scientific discovery.
