Sentences may be fragmented, jump between topics, and lack clear logical progression, mirroring the associative nature of human thought.

The term "stream of consciousness" was popularized by psychologist William James in his 1890 work "The Principles of Psychology." In literature, this technique gained prominence in the early 20th century with modernist writers. Authors like James Joyce, Virginia Woolf, and William Faulkner are well-known for employing this method to delve into the subjective consciousness of their characters.
