Määräindeksit

Määräindeksit, or quantity indices, are statistical tools used to measure changes in the quantity of goods or services over time. They are a type of index number, designed to capture the volume evolution of a set of items, often in contrast to price indices which track price changes. The core idea behind määräindeksit is to isolate the effect of quantity variations by keeping prices constant.

To construct a määräindeksi, a base period is chosen, and the quantities of goods or services in subsequent periods are compared to this base. Various methods exist for their calculation, with the Laspeyres and Paasche quantity indices being prominent examples. The Laspeyres quantity index uses the quantities from the base period as weights, while the Paasche quantity index uses the quantities from the current period. Fisher's ideal index, which is the geometric mean of the Laspeyres and Paasche indices, is another common approach aiming to reduce bias.

Määräindeksit are widely used in economics for analyzing production levels, consumption patterns, and trade flows. For instance, they can illustrate the growth or decline of industrial output, agricultural production, or the volume of exports and imports. They are essential for understanding the real economic growth of a country or sector, stripping away the influence of inflation.
