Myrddin

Myrddin is the Welsh name for the legendary figure popularly known in English as Merlin. In early Welsh literature Myrddin is depicted as a prophet and bard who spoke in visions and poetry; in some sources he is titled Myrddin Emrys.

The Welsh strands of Myrddin were later merged with the figure of Ambrosius Aurelianus, and by the 12th century Geoffrey of Monmouth's Historia Regum Britanniae presents Merlin as the wizard-mentor to King Arthur. Through Geoffrey's work and subsequent romances, the Myrddin figure evolves from a prophetic poet into a magical adviser whose powers include prophecy, enchantment, and the shaping of fate.

In Arthurian legend, Merlin helps secure Arthur's birth and succession and guides his early education; he is often portrayed as a cunning and sometimes trickster-like figure who uses magic and knowledge to influence events. Over time, Merlin's portrayal varies across authors, ranging from a benevolent tutor to a more morally ambivalent sorcerer.

Modern usage: In Welsh language and culture the name Myrddin persists as a historical-linguistic term and is used as a given name; Merlin remains the familiar form in English-language retellings. The character of Myrddin/Merlin remains a central figure in Arthurian myth and has influenced literature, film, and popular culture.
