Muslimer

Muslimer, or Muslims, are adherents of Islam, a monotheistic Abrahamic faith. They believe in one God, Allah, and follow the Qur'an as their holy book, supplemented by the prophetic tradition known as hadith. They regard Muhammad as the final prophet. Muslims come from diverse ethnic, linguistic, and cultural backgrounds and form a global community.

Islam teaches five core practices, commonly known as the Five Pillars: the declaration of faith (shahada), prayer (salat) performed five times daily, almsgiving (zakat), fasting during the month of Ramadan (sawm), and the pilgrimage to Mecca (hajj) for those who are able. Many Muslims observe dietary laws such as halal and participate in communal worship at mosques. Spiritual and ethical life is often guided by the Qur’an, the Sunnah (practices of Muhammad), and local religious authorities.

Muslims are not a monolith; there are major denominations, most notably Sunni and Shia, with other groups such as Ibadi and various Sufi traditions. Sunni Islam comprises the largest share of Muslims worldwide, while Shia communities are concentrated in parts of the Middle East and South Asia. Cultural practices vary widely by country and region, reflecting local customs, languages, and histories while sharing core beliefs.

Estimates place the global Muslim population in the vicinity of about 1.8 to 2.0 billion people. The Muslim world spans all continents, with large communities in Indonesia, South Asia, the Middle East, North Africa, and Sub-Saharan Africa, as well as significant diasporas in Europe, the Americas, and Oceania.
