Multipair

Multipair is a term used in electrical and telecommunications contexts to denote a cable, connector, or subsystem that carries multiple independent communication channels, each in the form of a twisted pair or a set of optical fibers paired for signaling. In copper-based systems, a multipair cable bundles many twisted pairs inside a single outer sheath, allowing multiple simultaneous circuits to share a common jacket.

Construction and coding: A typical multipair copper cable contains a fixed number of twisted pairs, with common values including 25 pairs or 50 pairs for larger installations. Each pair consists of two conductors twisted together to reduce electromagnetic interference and crosstalk. Pairs are color-coded for identification; in a 25-pair cable, the standard color code assigns unique combinations of primary and secondary colors to each pair. Connectors designed for multipair cabling include high-density plug interfaces and backplane connectors that terminate many pairs in parallel.

Applications: Multipair cables are used to carry multiple telephone lines, a feature still found in PBX systems and large office installations, and in data networks that reuse multiple pairs for different services. In some network configurations, all pairs within a multipair cable may be utilized to support higher-bandwidth links or to separate services (voice, data, and control) within the same jacket. Multipair cables also appear in internal wiring within telecommunications equipment, data centers, and industrial environments for control signaling.

Standards and considerations: The use of multipair copper cabling is covered by structured cabling standards such as TIA/EIA-568, which address performance, termination, and color-coding practices. Shielded variants (STP) reduce external interference but require careful grounding. Design considerations include impedance, crosstalk, attenuation, connector density, and compatibility with existing infrastructure.
