Multigigapascal

Multigigapascal is an informal term describing pressures of several gigapascals or more. It is not an official SI unit; the standard unit is the pascal (Pa). Common multiples include kilopascals, megapascals, and gigapascals. The prefix 'multigiga-' is used to emphasize very high-pressure regimes beyond a single gigapascal.

In high-pressure physics, materials science, and planetary science, multigigapascal conditions refer to states at tens to hundreds of gigapascals. They are relevant for phase transitions, metallic states of hydrogen, high-pressure superconductivity, and the behavior of minerals in planetary interiors. The term signals regimes beyond routine GPa-scale work.

Generation and measurement: Static methods such as diamond anvil cells produce multigigapascal pressures, often with X-ray diffraction or Raman spectroscopy to study structure. Dynamic methods like laser-driven shocks or pulsed power can reach higher pressures, though for shorter times. Researchers typically report the exact pressure in GPa rather than relying on the informal term.

Notes: Because multigigapascal is informal, it should accompany a specific value. It is a qualitative descriptor rather than a defined unit, and care is needed when comparing results across studies that use different conventions.
