The concept is more prominent in theoretical biology and computational neuroscience than in a strictly defined anatomical sense, as memory itself is a complex cognitive function mediated by distributed neural networks rather than a single, localized tissue.

In neurobiology, discussions of memory tissue often allude to brain regions known to be critical for memory formation and consolidation, such as the hippocampus, amygdala, and prefrontal cortex. These areas contain neurons and glial cells that form intricate connections, or synapses, which are believed to be strengthened or weakened through learning processes, thereby encoding memories.
