Muistinkäyttöön, often translated as "memory usage" or "RAM usage," refers to the way a computer's random-access memory (RAM) is allocated and utilized by the operating system and running applications. RAM is a crucial component for a computer's performance, as it provides fast access to data that the processor needs to work with. When a program is launched, its code and data are loaded into RAM for quick retrieval.

High memory usage can be a sign that the system is running out of available RAM. This can lead to a noticeable slowdown in performance, as the operating system may resort to using slower storage devices like hard drives or SSDs as virtual memory (swapping) when physical RAM is exhausted. This process, known as paging or swapping, significantly impacts responsiveness.

Several factors contribute to memory usage. The operating system itself requires a certain amount of RAM to function. Each application or process running on the system consumes a portion of the available memory. More complex or resource-intensive applications, such as video editing software, games, or virtual machines, tend to use more RAM. Having many applications open simultaneously also increases overall memory consumption.

Monitoring memory usage is often done through system tools like Task Manager on Windows or Activity Monitor on macOS. These tools display a breakdown of which processes are using the most memory, helping users identify potential bottlenecks. Optimizing memory usage can involve closing unnecessary applications, reducing the number of programs that start automatically with the system, or upgrading the system's RAM if it is consistently insufficient for the user's needs. Excessive memory usage without clear identifiable culprits might also indicate a software issue, such as a memory leak in a poorly written program.
