Muhammad Ali was an American professional boxer, philanthropist, and social activist born on January 17, 1942, in Louisville, Kentucky. He is widely regarded as one of the greatest boxers of all time and is often considered a cultural icon of the 20th century. Ali's real name was Cassius Marcellus Clay Jr., and he was raised in a middle-class household.

Ali began boxing at the age of 12, training at the local Louisville gym under the guidance of Joe Martin. He won a gold medal in the light heavyweight division at the 1960 Summer Olympics, which brought him national attention and recognition. Ali turned professional in 1960 and, despite his lack of experience, he won his first 19 fights by knockout or decision.
