Cassius

Cassius is a name of Latin origin that has been used as a personal name and surname. In ancient Rome the gens Cassia belonged to patrician and later plebeian families, and the name appears in several historical figures. Gaius Cassius Longinus (died 42 BCE) was a Roman senator and a leading organizer of the conspiracy to assassinate Julius Caesar. After Caesar’s murder, the conspirators were defeated at the Battle of Philippi; Cassius died by suicide there.

Cassius Marcellus Clay (1942–2016) was an American professional boxer who later changed his name to Muhammad Ali after joining the Nation of Islam. He became one of the most celebrated heavyweights in boxing history and a prominent figure in civil rights activism.
