Mpiisampi

Mpiisampi is a fictional small nocturnal mammal described in speculative biology and world-building literature. Endemic to the Meridian Archipelago, a chain of tropical islands in the imagined eastern ocean, the species occupies undisturbed forest understories and secondary growth at elevations from sea level to about 1200 meters. Adults are 12–18 cm long with a 15–25 cm prehensile tail, weighing between 120 and 180 grams. The fur is short and dense, typically gray-brown with a faint chest patch that can appear iridescent under dawn light. Large eyes and rounded ears reflect adaptation to low light.

Its behavior is largely crepuscular to nocturnal; individuals are mostly solitary, moving along vines and branches using the tail for balance. They forage for invertebrates, fruit, and seeds, and will cache surplus food in tree hollows. Vocalizations are soft chirps and clicks, with social interactions marked by scent marking and brief body postures.

Taxonomy and discovery: In the fictional taxonomy of this setting, mpiisampi is placed in the genus Mpiisampi within the family Mipidae. The name is derived from local language mpìi meaning night and sampi meaning wanderer, reflecting its nocturnal wanderings. The species was first described by field biologist A. Kholin in 2143 in a preliminary field guide. Conservation status is typically listed as Data Deficient due to its remote habitat, though habitat loss on some islands is noted as a potential threat.
